the vivisector      Interactive video projection (2015).

The piece was viewed through a small hole in a door. The viewer sees a short video loop showing a figure wading in to the sea, while wasps hover above. The instant they try to open the door, there is a sudden change. The figure disappears, sacred Islamic geometry radiates from the sun and the sound changes to the sound of an MRI scanner.

One of the main inspirations for this work was an episode from Patrick White’s novel, The Vivisector (1970), in which an artist affected by a stroke receives a letter from a humble woman who has had a profound spiritual insight after being stung by a wasp.
